We’ve got more snow than the record books have ever shown coming this early so there’s no problem there. Unfortunately, as you early snowmobilers know, we do have to deal with wet conditions in certain trail areas this early in the season – even though we’ve been getting some pretty cold temps. It will take a lot of packing the trails down and then freezing to get the wet areas good and frozen. Trail 8W has some extremely wet areas you must avoid!!!! Watch for signs and “dark” areas indicating water under the snow. The groomers have been out on trails where they could go, but I hesitate to say the base is hardened at this time. Trails 8 E and 1N will be in the best shape this early on with the driest conditions. Also, remember to stay on the trails so as not to jeopardize our land easements where the trails cross private property.
Trail 13 S will be completely open as of December 1st where it was always closed due to muzzle loading hunting. I guess there’s too much snow for them to go hunting this year. However, this trail will be very wet and has not been packed by the groomers yet due to hunting over the last half of November.
Please check back often as reports will be updated. When you come up, please support those businesses that display the Gogebic Area Grooming Supporter decal as they stand with us in local grooming efforts. Please ride safe.
December 2, 2014 | Lake Gogebic Area Chamber
Well with more then 90″ of snowfall in the Ironwood area more in higher terrain we have plenty of snow. The bad news is our swamps and low areas are not frozen so we have a lot of wet areas so please use caution. Our forecast for the remaining of the the week temps will be in the 20’s during the day and in the teens at night. Hopefully this will help get those wet spots to firm up.
The Gogebic Range Trail Authority: Reports Trail 2 from Marenisco to Hurley is groomed along with trail 8 to Tula is groomed. It is still early season riding with a lot of wet spots.
The Lake Gogebic groomer’s report: Since it is still early season riding the groomers are out packing the trails and in some places they will be out with the drags. Trails 8 east, 8 west and 1 north will be in the best shape for riding with the driest conditions for the early season. All the other trails will be very wet. Some good news with all this snow Trail 13 south will be completely open for opening season. This trail is still very wet and groomers have not been able to pack this trail yet.
The Watersmeet groomer’s report: Groomers are out getting the trails ready for the season. They are reporting some wet spots in the lower areas so please use caution when riding. It is still early season riding.
Please remember groomers are out both day and night, so watch for them, Please pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them.
JUST ONE MORE REMINDER: PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUBS LOSING EASEMENT FOR THAT TRAIL AND IT CAN ALSO RESULT IN A POSSIBLE TICKET FOR YOU.
