Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/07

Winter storm is on us, its 7:30 on Monday morning here at Lake Margrethe. Sleeting, raining, and snowing right now. Schools thruout northern Michigan are closed. Looks like a couple inches of white out there but the rain is hitting against the house right now. Very windy out there. There were still a few die hards out and about on their sleds yesterday around Frederic but it wasn’t anything I would want to have my sleds out on. It never got warm enough to melt anymore yesterday but everything was froze up hard from the night before so that gives us an icy base underneath.

Today is not a day to ride either but it will be nice if we get a few more inches of snow and the sleet stops. I drove up to Gaylord yesterday afternoon and the trail was a big black mud path right up the middle along Old 27. I hope saying big & black doesn’t offend anyone, you have to be so careful these days on what you say……There were 3 sleds parked out under the sign at Porter Haus (formally the Stampede) as I drove by there. I should have taken a picture as there wasn’t a drop of snow in the parking lot. I sure wouldn’t want to be dry sliding my machine across there.

I also discovered a new place to go to eat. I never even heard of this place going in but it is just south of Bennethums and Porter Haus. Its only been open a couple of weeks and it is called Belle Iron Grille. (PIcs below) I stopped in there yesterday and they did a really nice job on this place, They have a pretty nice menu with Pizza, Ribs, Steaks. A huge long bar with all that craft beer that some people like (me I prefer a bud lite). Nice seating area and a very cool gas log firelplace with stand up logs in it that you view from both the inside and outside of the place. They do not even have a sign up yet. The lady told me that they are still on their soft opening but will have a grand opening soon. Its right on trail seven so its easy access and its always nice to see a new place….Now all we need is some real winter. I am in for a day of fun as I am leaving in a bit to take my daughter back to school in Ann Arbor…Its gonna be a long slow trip and I don’t think I am going to miss any business in Frederic today. Thanks for checking in and I am heading south. Go Blue……Pete

Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/04

There’s good bad news and bad news. Good news is that things have been holding pretty decently. Many sleds in yesterday and I would guess ten in here already this morning before ten a.m. Yesterday was by far the busiest sled traffic day of the season. Now the bad news is that is 32 and sunny out and 45 is predicted high for both today and tomorrow. It doesn’t take much sun to wipe things out if there is a bright sun.

There is no way to say if its going to stay or not. There is still a lot of snow in the woods so if trails start to deteriorate there are a lot of 2 tracks to do back up riding on. Next snow is maybe on Monday. Trail crossings along m 93 by Hanson Hills, at the high school and north of the high school all looked pretty good when I looked at them on the way up here this morning. That’s the best I can tell you right now.

The Mountain Man showed up here yesterday to entertain a large group of riders that had stopped in. He is in the middle of the group picture below along with one I took of him inside here. He had his music in his truck cranked up with some Johnny Cash and was outside singing to the guys. Last time I saw him last night I showed him where the army surplus store had moved to in Grayling and he was spinning donuts in the parking lot of the surplus store. He certainly is an experience.

The sunset pic below is over Lake Margrethe last night. Thanks for checking in. Pete
