Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 04/05

Just what the doctor ordered, for at least yesterday. I took off out of here yesterday morning on my sled about 9:30. The ride was good, skis weren’t touching the ground and I headed up towards starvation lake for the first time this season on my sled. First thing I discovered was the 791 trail to Starvation Lake that I had never seen before so I don’t know when they slid that in there. Snow was deeper up that way, Hide away wasn’t even open yet and I continued on to Alba, the snow and stopped for gas there, deep powdery snow and had to go slow as it was coming up into my face (darn)……headed north to Jordan Valley trail along the river was great. On up to Larrys where I had lunch and a nice visit with Larry. He has been in business there in Elmira for 52 years and his wife makes a great burger too. From there off towards Gaylord and then the trail south down to waters to the Keg where I met my friend Jack for lunch number 2. From there off to two tracks for more incredible back trail riding. Back to Frederic about 5 for what turned out to be a picture perfect 94 mile ride that I never would have thought would happen this season again. Many phone calls about people still wanting to come up for this weekend. There are predictions of a few inches both tonight and Friday. As I have said many times the best ride was for those lucky enough to get on it yesterday and the first ones thru as it doesn’t take much to pack it down to the ground below. I passed maybe 15 sleds yesterday. The good thing is it was 6 degrees this morning when I was in town still at 9 a.m. Its now up to 25 at 10:30 a.m. The big question is can you ride. Answer, yes but don’t expect as good as yesterday unless you find 2 tracks. Do not go thru closed gates. I have seen conditions worse than this. I don’t expect many people will get out there but I am sure some will do it. Its all a bonus from here. I only saw a couple tracks in my drive here from yesterday while I was gone so I sure didn’t miss much business plus it was way more fun out on the trails than sitting here. That’s the best I can say for today. Pics below I took on my ride yesterday. Thanks for checking in. Pete

Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 04/04

One more time. Its Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. 25 degrees with light wind out there. Roughly 6 inches of snow in the drive here but I had 9 inches on the back of my truck this morning. Thicker snow on the bottom as it was wetter when it started falling yesterday. Many people have called about wanting to ride and wonder if the trails are open or not. I do not know the right answer to that question but I am going to try it and head out for a ride. My sled has been sitting by the door for a long time with a full tank of gas. What we do have will only last a little while and will be best for the few that do manage to get out on it first. I could be wrong and my skis may ride right on the dirt in which case I will turn around and come back but hey I have to try. School all thru northern Michigan are closed and roads still need to get plowed. That’s the best I can say, pics are from out front here a few minutes ago. Thanks for checking in. Pete
