Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/21

Yes I am still here, its 2 oclock on thursday afternoon and I just got to Frederic about 20 minutes ago. Now that the snow is leaving I went to our weekly Century 21 real estate meeting and did that and our new listings home tour. I did see 2 sleds ride thru Frederic yesterday but trails or whats left of them are mostly ice and slush. For those of you that think you want to try one more time to ride if you know of a spot in the woods where there are two tracks you will have to unload at that area and ride, so you will have to work for it but you should be able to pull it off. So back to my ride in the u.p. Left the parking lot in Newberry at Timber Charlies and headed up to Wolf Inn and then to Pine Stump. From there trail to Grand Marais and was near town at about six but that was to early to check in so I did 888 to 88 to 8 which is always fun. Saw five different groomers that afternoon. Went and checked into Superior Hotel, very cool old school hotel with ten rooms upstairs and 2 shared bathrooms. Rick and Mary are great hosts and I have wanted to stay there for a long time and am so glad I finally did. Met Josh and Amber from Romulus at Lake Superior Brewing Company and had a good time talking with them. Apparently her dad (Jay McCumber) reads here everyday too so a shout out to him….Tuesday morning I was up and away for another 130 miles of great riding, ran over to the Bear Trap and then to Shingleton and back to Newberry for a total of 231 miles. Great riding for the end of the season. Seney, Grand Marais, Chippewa, and Munising groomers all doing an incredible job up there and I think they still have enough snow to make it thru this weekend. Roads pretty dry getting into Grand Marais but worth doing it. You can always get new carbides and slide. Here is a link to the video I did of my trip. I have to say I cant believe I did what I did in the video as I am always harping at people to come to complete stops at the signs and I certainly didnt here. I have no excuse for it but am aware that I did. Riding in the U.P. March 2019  Thanks for checking in. Pete

Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/20

This is not the report i wanted to put out this morning but two more senseless deaths happened in the u.p. on trail 8 west of munising on monday night. Trail 8 is a long east, west route and I rode alot of it on monday night.. For those of you who may have seen my facebook video on monday night I talked about how it bothered me that these sleds come at you on the trail and they are full power on and not slowing down a bit and then with their sled darting a little in the snow they are giving you a count of sleds coming up behind them and they can barely hang on while doing it. Some spots there is barely room to pass and it would be so easy to hook skis. I know I am old and cautious but I always back off the throttle when I have sleds coming at me. These 2 deaths monday night put this years total to 17. I ran into two guys from Caledonia on the trail yesterday and they had heard about this accident but I hadnt heard anything about it till this morning. Thanks to Ken for keeping me informed. News story below. I would rather be sharing pics and the story of my ride from the past two days but this is way more important. SLOW DOWN & STAY RIGHT

Upon arrival it was discovered that two snowmobilers were involved in a head-on collision. Both operators were ejected from their snowmobiles.

Despite all efforts from first responders, both operators were pronounced dead at the scene. Excessive speed is believed to be the cause of the crash.

The investigation is still ongoing.
