Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 02/10

February 10th, 2014 – Well, finally a little change to the weather pattern we’ve been stuck in for a record breaking 72 day in a row with below 0 temperatures! Yup, that’s right; 72 days of -0 temps, now do you really think you can complain about your weather? Not that we needed the snow, but I’m happy to report approximately 4 inches of new snow fell over Sunday the 9th…kind of pretties it up a little more. All three of our groomers are out on all of Gogebic Area Grooming’s trails with no problems to report on any of our trails – so come on up and enjoy some great riding! This upcoming weekend is looking like highs into the 20’s (for a change) and lows in the single digits to teens. It’s also looking like more snow showers from Wednesday through the weekend – more white stuff to play in for you.

I’m happy to report less snowmobile traffic riding on the railroad tracks through Merriweather and Bergland. I know there are a lot of snowmobile tracks running on the railroad tracks and it can get confusing…but don’t follow blindly along other snowmobile tracks. When in doubt, look for trail signs. If you see a R/R sign, guess what? You’re on a railroad track! Get off of it ASAP!! You could get stuck on the tracks and you could get a ticket for riding on them. I know the R.R. tracks haven’t been in use for a number of years now but they are still considered “active”, so you never know when you might come nose to nose with a very large locomotive…not cool. Law enforcement has been out patrolling these areas and will ticket anyone found riding on the R/R tracks.

We want to thank all that came to the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Radar Run held down at the Gogebic Lodge this year. Reports show a good turn out and lots of fun was had by all. Make sure to keep it on your calendar for next year – the first weekend in February. See if you can take home best bragging rights!

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. I will keep you posted as often as conditions change. Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 02/07

February 7th, 2014 – Well….there hasn’t been too many new trail reports this week, pretty much because the conditions just haven’t changed. It’s been sunny and very cold every day! The daytime temps have stayed mostly in the single digits and nighttime temps have been below zero. In fact, most of the UP is close to breaking a record of most consecutive days below zero. We haven’t been receiving much in the way of snow, mostly because Lake Superior has frozen completely over north of the west end of the UP. Since the clouds coming across Lake Superior can’t pick up any moisture from the lake in a frozen state we don’t get much snow. But not to fear, because it has stayed so cold we haven’t lost any of the snow we had already received (and there is plenty of it). When it does warm up the ice may break up on Lake Superior and then we’ll be back in a pattern of getting more snow. But for now, with plenty of snow on the trails and the below normal cold temperatures our groomer drivers have been keeping the Gogebic Area Grooming trails in excellent condition. No problems to report on any of our trails – so come on up and enjoy some great riding!

Once again local law enforcement has asked me to remind snowmobilers that it is against the law to ride on the railroad tracks that run through Merriweather and Bergland. In some areas the snowmobile trails do run parallel to the tracks so please look for trail signage to let you know you are riding in the right area. Law enforcement has been out patrolling these areas and will ticket anyone not using the trails.

That’s all for now from Carolyn at the Hoop. I will keep you posted as often as conditions change.
