Paradise Area Trail Report – 03/09

31 degrees this early afternoon. Sorry I didn`t get out a report earlier but I had some important business to take care of this morning. I gotta say this…..boy…..do people turn on you hard and fast when you don`t word something quite right. I didn`t say our trails were crap, in fact, I said they were in decent shape in my last report, but I guess some people took it wrong. All I really said was the next few sunny days weren`t gonna help the trails at all. Lighten up people!! Here`s my latest report and I`ll try and be more careful with my words…..
Groomer Scott hit the Falls trail #45 last night and said it is still in good shape. There is some dirt showing in a couple spots and the wet areas are starting to break up but not bad.
The Stump trail and the Point trails are being run right now but I know they are still in good shape. There is more dirt and gravel starting to show up the last couple of days and the dirt back roads we use are pretty muddy but the trail is still very ridable.
As far as the South trail #8 goes. The swamp is bare dirt and ice now for the most part. We don`t dare run a 5 ton groomer thru there anymore. There are some 6 ft.+ deep holes in there and we ain`t sinkin no groomer! It is gettin dangerous for sleds now so we are gonna close the gates today. We have to run the groomer about 10 miles down the road to hit the next good snow which is not worth it just to groom another 10 so we are done with that section. It is ridable (except the swamp).
So there ya have it. Our trail system is still in fair-good shape but expect some dirt and gravel here an there like late season ridin.

No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.
Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks. A new two-day record was also broken at the NWS office in Marquette of 36"+ with this blizzard, which is just one record smashed by this blizzard.

Highs will be around 20. Tonight and Wednesday, a weak system brings a widespread 1 to 2 inches of snow, with lows in the single digits in the interior to 10s around the lakeshores. Highs Wednesday will be in the 30s. Trail update
Firsts thoughts are what the heck do we do??? Well at the moment we unhooked drag and running the John Deere track tractor just to try and break through. We received somewhere around 3ft so far where it hasn't blowed. There is 6 ft plus drifting in spots. The drifts are gonna get hard to. As much as I would like to say it's awesome out here it just isn't and will take several days to get somewhat of a trail. We are just getting started so there could be more surprises but we are trying!! For the next several days if you are coming up our trails are drifting and there is so much snow that it will take several trips to get smoothed out. We will update when things change. Unfortunately we are holding off grooming until the weather dies down and then long enough to get dug out!! I do not know how many inches of snowfall we have had with this current storm, but drifts are from 5 to 10 feet around my house and driveway!
I hope everyone is staying safe and indoors. It took about 35 minutes to dig out far enough for our dog to go out... and right back in!!! I put a shovel in the snow on top of where our generator is...in case power goes out and it don't start I will be able to find it. Stay safe, ride right, and for now, bench race!!!

Hard to predict the total so far , but I'd say 20" and blizzard warnings for another 18 hours. Definitely closed until further notice. If your needing to be out, but shouldn't be Paradise Rec Sports did post they were Open until 6 pm. Glad someone can accommodate for emergency sake. Wheelhouse Diner is also Open. I'd advice to stay off road so county plow trucks can do their job without risk of someone stuck on highway, which report big truck near Rivermouth stuck on M123 in snow drift.
