SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/14
12/14 update- things are in awesome shape where we have groomed!
The exceptions are the city trails. They are passable from what I saw, but bumpy. Behind Kewadin is still a mess and best to avoid it. 49 from the Soo to Kinross is also still too wet for a groomer.
Pics from today, captions include the trail and location. Again, many, many forest service roads between Bay Mills, Raco, and Strongs have tons of snow, some untouched if you’re looking to play in the powder.
Our groomers rock! I hope they all know how appreciated they are. Saw nothing but smooth trails and smiles all day!
Get out and ride tomorrow if you can! ❄️💙🥶

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/13
12/13 – Friday the 13th🥶😱
Maybe not the best day to check trail conditions in the swamp if you’re superstitious, but our brave volunteer Lane decided to take a ride north on 49 from Kinross to give us a report and a visual.
He made it over the Beaver Pond (awesome!!!) that has a redecked bridge, and almost got to 12 mile when he saw a large water hole that wasn’t quite frozen solid yet. My guess is that there is more of the same between 8 and 12 mile. We are not sending a groomer in there yet, and if you choose to try it, it’s at your own risk. Please know that only 10 days ago it was all under water.
We did have snow on and off all day in the Soo, hard to say how much. Maybe 3-4”? City trails are still a bit wet for a groomer. Use caution!!!
Other parts of our trail system such as Brimley, Raco, and Kinross south are in good shape.
Have a fun and safe weekend! We’ll be updating! As always, feel free to share what you’re seeing out there❄❄❄

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/10/26 From groomer Jay tonight- “City trails are good. I wouldn’t call them great, fair to good. OG (Original Groomer) Ben, and I broke through on the I-500 trail. That crew plowed the parking lot to prep for the race, so that’s rough, and will be until after the race, but also very wet. All in all the only real trail problems for our city trails is Seymour hill. We tried dumping snow in the water and were unsuccessful. We didn’t ride down the high school trail, but the Kewadin trail was in fair to good shape. Roads and shoulders will be bare, but the trails are in good enough shape to ride. We picked up a few inches as we groomed, but it didn’t help much. I will say, it was good to have Ben at the helm today. He’s a brother, and the one who really set the tone and showed me the ropes on how to groom trails. Hanging out together was a great day! Welcome Back OG, we missed you!!” Thank you Jay and Ben! Great to see Ben back in the seat!❄️❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0110b#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Quieter weather settles in across the U.P. today as lingering snow showers tapering off this morning. A weak clipper system will bring another round of light snow tonight, but only expect another inch or so of accumulation in most locations. After another quiet day on Monday, another system brings a mix of rain and snow to the area on Tuesday. #miweather #keweenaw#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaQuieter weather settles in across the U.P. today as lingering snow showers tapering off this morning. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Widespread snow will begin to spread west to east this morning while a heavier snowband looks to set up in the central UP this afternoon. Uncertainty still remains where this snowband will park, however, heavy snowfall rates will likely create difficult travel along US-41 from Delta to Marquette/Alger counties. Tonight, widespread snow transitions to lake effect snow for the north wind snowbelts. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Accumulating snow will continue to spread across northern Michigan today into Sunday. Accumulations remain consistent to this mornings forecast with 3-6” for most of the area and localized 7”+ possible where heaviest snow falls this evening and tonight. The combination of snow covered roads and reduced visibility will lead to hazardous travel across parts of the area. #miweather #gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey #soo #newberryAccumulating snow will continue to spread across northern Michigan today into Sunday. SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/11
12/11 update-
Good morning all!
Brimley Bill was out this morning very early to make his run on 8 between Brimley and Raco, and part of 480 through the Spile Dam.
Here’s his report-
“This morning while the temperature was still low, I groomed Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, the power-line to Ranger Road, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road.
Most of the route is looking pretty good. There is a section on Trail 8 from Brimley to about halfway to Raco where the snow on the trail is getting thin. There are ponds and swampy areas on both sides of the trail. The ground isn’t frozen yet, and the snow is just soaking into the trail.
From the photos you can see a set of tracks that left deep ruts on Trail 480. The tracks started just south of M28, and continued on Trail 480 past where I turned around on Spile Dam Road. The tracks were so deep that it took two groomer passes to fill them in. The photos were taken after the first pass. You can see how deep they are, even after the first groomer pass.”
I have a message out on the local ORV club page to remind folks that this section is sled only. Hopefully, it was just a mistake and we won’t have any further issues.
Thank you Bill for your time and the report!
Again, no big snow here last night or today. Lake effect is supposed to return tomorrow. ❄❄❄
