SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/01
1/1/25- Good morning and Happy New Year!
There is winter weather advisory for Central Chippewa County until noon tomorrow. What this means for the Soo is yet to be seen. I would expect that areas of our trail system to our west like Raco and Bay Mills will see more than the Soo will.
As I’ve been mentioning, we still have a solid base from the Soo west to Brimley, Raco, up to 889 in Bay Mills. Based on reports from riders yesterday, fire roads in the Raco area are still snow covered too.
I know that areas south lost most of the snow. Trail 49 from the Soo to Gaines Hwy is very wet, especially south of 12 mile. Also very wet behind Kewadin Casino to Ashmun on the city trails.
Please do not ride in those areas. If you do, use extreme caution and be prepared to get stuck. It’s a long walk to get help. There is a side road near Kewadin to get around and over to where the trail picks up by the high school, but I’m not sure how wet it is on that trail either.
I haven’t heard anything from the Kinross area around the airport, so I’d love if anyone down that way could check in on how the base is looking down that way.
In summary, the northern and western parts of our trail system held up, and will benefit the most from incoming snow.
As a reminder, most city streets in the Soo ARE legal to ride with a few exceptions.
I will keep you updated as we move through the incoming snow. ❄️❄️❄️
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Widespread snow will begin to spread west to east this morning while a heavier snowband looks to set up in the central UP this afternoon. Uncertainty still remains where this snowband will park, however, heavy snowfall rates will likely create difficult travel along US-41 from Delta to Marquette/Alger counties. Tonight, widespread snow transitions to lake effect snow for the north wind snowbelts. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/9/26 Good morning! It would be better if the rain had missed us, but it looks like we’re almost done with it. We lost another 4” of snow overnight, down to 18” here in the Soo, but still completely snow covered. No doubt that trails will be “crunchy”, and may even have some water pooling in spots, but I think we’ll fare just fine. That base is incredible! Cold returns tonight, and some snow tomorrow into Sunday. Temps look pretty good beginning late tonight. If you’re out riding, please let us know what you’re seeing. I’m not sure if we’ll have groomers out later tonight or not, as everything was pretty darn flat before the meltdown. I’ll keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0109#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via Pictured Rocks Marine Weather Conditions >> OK, here's the latest! Shown below is the expected 24-hour snowfall accumulation from 7pm today through 7pm Friday, along with the 24-hour snowfall from 7am Saturday through 7am Sunday. The 12-hour "gap" in between those two periods is the lull between the two waves of snow, when not much is expected to happen. And the snowmelt from the warm spell today should largely have ceased by then. More snow is also expected after 7am on Sunday and even into Monday, but it's a bit too early to call the snow amounts for that time period. SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/31
12/31- finally seeing cooler temps and light snow this morning, even though none was forecasted for today. News stations are starting to report that we should see measurable snow by Thursday in the 6-8” range.
All indications are that that our base survived, but obviously we have not been on every single part of each trail. We know that 49 south of the Soo and the city trails from Kewadin to Ashmun will be very wet and we are continuing to advise that you stay out of both areas, even after the snow comes, until we can assess those areas. We can’t roll groomers until there is measurable fresh snow to groom, and even then we’ll likely let sleds pack it down first to preserve it.
I can tell you that they were flat as heck before the warm up, so my hope is that they still are. I read 8” left here on my snow gauge in the Soo. The woods have more. When I looked at trail 8 yesterday, I’d say there’s easily a 4-5” ice base.
We’ll keep you posted!
Have a safe and happy New Years Eve celebration everyone! Do your snow boogie! ❄️❄️❄️
