SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 01/22

1/22/25
Looking awesome in the southern part of our trail system! Thanks to groomer Pat for running the Kinross east loop. This is 49 south of M80, and the 494 loop around the Kinross airport, one of my favorite loops!
Around 3” of new snow down that way was enough to really freshen it up!

Still a bit thin around 20 Mile, south of where 49 and 494 meet. Otherwise, he calls the loop excellent!
Looking awesome, thanks Pat! ❄️❄️❄️

Sorry for the delay guys! Busy day at work for me. Here are a few pics from this morning on 889 from Warren, and the city trails from Bryan last night.

Big thanks to Pete and Bryan for doing some work on the drag. We are making it last as long as we can, but we are in dire need of at least one new drag. Hopefully, we’ll be eligible the next go around for equipment🤞

Things are really good to excellent over our entire system now. As a reminder, we turn around north of Rudyard, but we know many riders like to know the conditions there. They have unfortunately not received any new snow for a bit. Hopefully that changes soon! Trout Lake is also out of our area, but they got a much needed 8-12” today! Woo hoo!

We have a few thin spots closer to Kinross on 49, but othersie all areas have really good snow coverage.

Enjoy! ❄❄❄

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A fast-moving system this evening through tonight brings 4 to 8 inches of snowfall to the area. Most snow will fall within a 6 hour period with moderate to heavy snow rates (0.5 to 1+ inch per hour) and quickly reduced visibilities down to 1/4 mile or less for a 2 to 4 hour period. Snow will end overnight into early Monday morning. The Monday morning commute could be impacted, especially in the east, mainly for roads that have not been treated/cleared yet.
Late Monday night into Tuesday brings a wintry mix which could create more slick road conditions. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/3/26
Good morning everyone! 24” in the Soo, 30”+ in Brimley/Raco areas. 4-8” in the forecast through tomorrow. Lots of weekend traffic out there yesterday and here’s the scoop.
All operators are reportig that snow is soft and doesn’t set up great, but we’re doing what we can with it.
🔔 Unfortunately, we are Down 2 of 4 machines temporarily this morning. The Pisten Bully in Raco has a hydraulic leak again, and we are hoping that will be a a quick fix. The Tucker that was stuck is thawed out now and we’ll be going over it today to ensure it’s ready to go for our city run tonight. City trails will be a little rough til then. 🔔
❄️Trail 8- bumpy from the Soo to Brimley, but no deep moguls, just a lot of chatter bump in spots and will be groomed tonight. Brimley to Raco is was done last night and was excellent when I rode through there.
❄️ City Trails- part of 49, 449, 497, and the I500 courtesy trail- lots of drifting in the open areas, fair to good. Needs a groom to manage drifts and moguls, and we’ll get to it hopefully tonight once the Tucker is good to go.
❄️ ‼️ Trail 49 - Soo to Kinross- rough from Devils Hill to 12 mile, and we left the groomer out of there the last few days to let it freeze in more. Passable by sled with some wet spots, so use caution. Continued cold and sleds packing it will make a big difference. 12 mile north to the Soo is in much better shape, but will be getting bumpy with weekend traffic until we csn get the Tucker back out there. Please stay on the trail! There are water hazards under the snow off trail in several areas.
❄️49 south of M80 and the 494 loop- excellent. No issues here, other than maybe some drifts in open areas.
❄️472 out of Kinross to Tilson Rd- our first pass since the storm was made yesterday so it is much improved. Fair to good. We cannot groom past Tilson due to ongoing construction.

Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 01/21

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 01/21

1/21/25
Good morning everyone! It’s a chilly one here today at -6 with a -17 windchill🥶

Our operators have been out all hours to make things as good as can be for all of you.

Here’s Steve’s report from his (and others!) run down 49 to Kinross last night.

“Last night we made the run from the Soo to Kinross on Trail 49. With the recent cold weather we were able to safely make it through the swamp south of 12 Mile and stay on top of the ice.
Last night’s run was a team effort with many club members involved. The run takes five hours if everything goes perfect.
We decided to spend some time on the courtesy trail to Chippewa Motors again before leaving town. We also wanted to swap out groomers in Kinross and bring one back to the barn for normal maintenance. These added tasks make for a long night.

Thankfully, we have a great group of volunteers who work great together.

The courtesy trail is a tricky stretch until we get the trail set. We have had some confusion with where exactly the trail should be. We were able to set the edges again last night.
Thank you to Groomer Nathan for starting the run early and following the map we provided to Chippewa Motors. He made it through fine and only pushed up water in one spot.

I then took control of the groomer and headed south towards Kinross. Had a wiper fall off just south of town. I made a temporary repair and it stayed on for another six miles. It then fell off again and I ran over it with the groomer. I did retrieve it but I am not sure it can be saved.

I made my way to Kinross and worked my way to the groomer staged down there. Thank you to Groomer Lane who followed me on Groomer Tracker and met me when I got there. He had the groomer warmed up and ready to go for me. Temperature was right around zero and it is much appreciated.

I made my way north and met groomer Dennis at Walmart where he made the last hour or so of the run.

Including our Trail Boss Mike who coordinated the run, there were five volunteers who made this one trip happen. It is nice to share once in a while what happens in the background on a regular basis keeping our trails maintained.

Overall, I was happy with how the trails turned out. It was so cold the snow was chunky and hard to work with. I knocked down the bumps and leveled out the drifts that formed over the weekend. From the Soo to 10 Mile, there was plenty of new snow to work with. It thins out the further south we go.

I hit heavy snow squalls on the return trip. Not sure if it accumulated but it certainly reduced visibility.

The trail is still in great shape in my opinion. Hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy it.

Steve Lawson”

Thank you to all involved!

Stay warm if you head out. Be sure to be prepared for a breakdown and don’t ride alone in this bitter cold. Please download the what3words app in case of an emergency to help first responders locate you.

Ride safe, ride right, ride sober! ❄️❄️❄️

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

🚨 472 and 480 to the Raco gate- please see the pinned post. We cannot groom in here yet due to bridge construction. The Raco gate is closed.
❄️ 480 from the Spile Dam turnaround to the Raco Powerline ( trail 8 ) - excellent
❄️ Raco Powerline- good, corner gets moguled out easily with heavy traffic
❄️889 The Mission Hill Loop- fair- all trees have been cleared and it groomed up nicely Friday, but the Pisten Bully is down temporarily so it may get bumpy in spots with heavy traffic.
Ride safe everyone!
