Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 01/11

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 1/11

Groomer Bryan and his little helper went out and hit the city trails tonight. As you can see, they shaped up beautifully with all of the new snow. Even the ditches near Kewadin Casino are nearly completely filled in now. Grooming is tiring work- the sled counter fell asleep😴

Thank you Bryan, Logan, and all volunteers!

Please help support our efforts by joining or donating today at www.sootrails.org

See you on the trails!❄️❄️❄️

Good morning! Now that the snow has settled, it looks like we picked up around 15” or so of new snow with the storm here in the Soo. There is a post further down where people are reporting snow totals for the area if you want to get a bigger picture. Feel free to also report those on this post. We do still have 2 of the 3 groomers down and being worked on today. However, groomer Dave was able to get old #7 up and running yesterday and went to the Spile Dam on trails 480 and parts of 472. The parts for the Pisten Bully that does trail 889 in Brimley and Bay Mills will be here today. Here’s the report:

*Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –
Excellent- groomed 1/11 – lots of new snow here so this trail is excellent!

*Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 and #480 to just west of Spile Dam
Good- groomed 1/7, waiting on parts for the groomer. Should be back up today.

When going across the bridge in Brimley make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Watch for trail change going south just before getting to Raco.
*Mission Hill trail #889

Good – groomed 1/7, waiting on the parts for the groomer, should be fixed today

*Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49

Good- Groomed 1/10– overall in good shape with some drifting by the airport. There is a WET AREA on the courtesy trail to The Antlers. DO NOT attempt to ride through there. Sleds are getting stuck in deep water and mud. All of the new snow will help and that shouldn’t be an issue much longer, we just need to get in there to check it out.

Be sure to stop at the stop sign on top of the hill by the tunnel. It is very difficult for groomers to stop when they are going up hill so please stop and stay off to the side.
We now have a marked trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.
City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember most City streets are open to traffic 20 mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right hand side of the street, not on side walks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

*Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –
Fair to Poor – We can only groom to just south to 12 mile at this time. There was an open ditch where the bridge is out south of 3 mile mile that has likely frozen over enough for sleds but the groomer keeps breaking through so we are not grooming that section for now. There are also wet areas south of 12 mile. Gates are currently open but it will be bumpy since it’s not groomed much south of 12 mile.

Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile road .

*Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494-

Fair to good- some moguls

*Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480-
Good – Groomed 1/10 Groomer Dave was able to fill in a lot of the moguls with new snow.

There is a long stretch of road riding along Ploegstra Road before you get to the Spile Dam area where it is down to pavement when we do not have recent snow

Ride safe and stay warm! Currently -7 with a real feel of -17🥶❄️🥶❄️

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 11/9/2025
Good evening everyone! We received our first measurable snow overnight, and thanks to Pete, Ryan, and all who have helped them this fall, our trail signing is complete!!🙌🏼
Here’s Pete’s report from today-
“November 9th 2025
Trail report:
Volunteers: Two
Total time: 10hrs
Miles traveled: 5
Holes dug: 42
New posts put up: 39
Wildlife: 4 deer
Times stuck in mud: no comment
Weather: clear, 29 degrees
Ryan and I couldn’t wrangle up any help today, so we finished our trail signing alone today. We started early and headed across town to start on trail 449. We put up 18 posts in the first 1/2 mile. The trail leading to the Kewadin Casino is VERY wet. Glad to report how well the Polaris winch worked today! On a good note, that trail has been worked on and riders should find it in better shape early in the season. We strategically worked our way through the wet areas and completed signing on 449 and 497. The only place we couldn’t get to was the hill between Ashmun Creek and the I-75 tunnel. The thick red clay muck was too much, and our prayers to the Gods of traction went unanswered. It was a rough day and we are completely worn out. I am
glad to report that the trail brushing is going to greatly improve early season riding!
The new Culver’s restaurant is coming along AWESOME. The trail runs right next to the parking lot. I imagine we will be able to get a ButterBurger this season.
The trails open in 22 days! We will report to the DNR that we are ready for our trail audit, and then fix any problems they find. Other than that, we are ready to RIDE!
Trail Guru Pete”
As always, thank you to our awesome volunteers, and to ALL who help support our efforts!

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 1/11

Good morning! Now that the snow has settled, it looks like we picked up around 15” or so of new snow with the storm here in the Soo. There is a post further down where people are reporting snow totals for the area if you want to get a bigger picture. Feel free to also report those on this post.
