SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/21

🚨🚨1/21 Trail 49 closure update🚨🚨

Good evening!

The good, the bad, and the downright UGLY.

3 of us took sleds down the closed part of 49 today from the Soo to Kinross. We saw a decent amount of traffic for a closed trail.
The good news is that we made it just fine and the beaver pond shows little to no water. It wasn’t nearly as whooped out as I thought it would be, considering we haven’t been able to groom it. Of course, we know traffic has been lighter because it’s closed too.

The bad is that we still cannot get a groomer through there. The water is so random this year and in spots that I have never seen it seeping through before. We had one hole we had to “jet ski” across and others had narrow spots around.

The ugly is that, it is in such rough shape with ice chunks and open water and mud that it’s hard to imagine we will be able to groom it at all this season if we don’t get a long spell of cold temps and more snow.

We stopped at The Well Diggers Ass and had an AWESOME lunch. Thank you Michelle and crew for supporting us!
We took 472 west to 480 to 8 home and it was in good shape except the 2 water holes just east of 480 on 472. Pics of those below too.

I will talk with our club president and the DNR for their input in 49 and will keep you posted.

Wish I had better news on 49🙁

Ride safe all! ❄️❄️❄️

<>

Good evening! It sure is way more fun when I can share good news! We got a solid snowfall of anywhere from 7-12” depending on the area. And…. It’s cold🙌🏼
Steve and Nathan were out on the city trails tonight and they shaped up beautifully! Here’s what Steve had to say-
“Groomer Nathan and I went out tonight and groomed the city trail system.
We had 8 or 9 inches of fresh snow to work with. It was certainly a winter wonderland.
Trail conditions were great. We were able to pull snow into a lot of the low spots. The water hole near the tunnel is froze and snow covered. We seen almost no water at all on the trails tonight.
We groomed everything within the city limits with the exception of the stretch from Seymour Rd to the casino due to 2 water holes behind Kewadin.
Hope you enjoy the pictures we took along the way.
Steve Lawson”
Thanks guys! Looking awesome out there!❄️❄️❄️

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/1/2026
Good evening! Turbo and Diane did an earlier run for a change today on trail 8 from Raco all the way to the Soo. While we typically do not like to groom during the day on a weekend, sometimes that’s what we need to do due to scheduling purposes. With cold temps and light sled traffic, it should help keep the snow a little looser for cooling.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and they saw a few groups out enjoying it, and some wildlife too.
As a reminder, this is a shared trail with ORVs less than 65” wide between the Soo and the Raco turn off. This is only shared trail in our area, and it isn’t wide enough for a SxS and groomer to pass on the trail. They encountered one SxS today that turned around so that they could continue on their way. We appreciate the driver moving so that they could pass.
Thank you to the Turbos! Looking awesome! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301b #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/1/26
Happy March everyone! Hard to believe it’s the last (official) month of the season. And what a season it has been!
We had another record traffic Saturday, and our operators have been working so hard to keep things as smooth as we can for you.
After a long, cold, and windy day on the St Mary’s River at the radar run yesterday, Brimley Bill got a few hours of sleep and then headed out to hit the Mission Hill route. We call this route M40 for our reporting purpsoes. It’s 480 from M28, to 8, to Ranger Rd, and the 889 grade and 889 loop in the Raco and Bay Mills areas.
Here’s his report-
“I groomed M40 early this morning. Pretty much all of 889 was really beat up. I did my best to cut out all of the bumps. Some of the curves were so bad that I was not able to completely remove all of the bumps, (probably 90% gone.). The trail 8 Powerline and 480 RR Grade were still in pretty good shape. I smoothed out whatever bumps were there.”
Thank you, Bill! You’d never know now that hundreds of sleds ran those trails yesterday! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301 #snowphotos

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Lake effect flurries and snow showers are possible today, March 1st, 2026 across some of northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. With dry air mixing in, totals will be relatively kept in check, but a swath of 1-3", perhaps 4" is possible along M-28 south of Grand Marais. Changing wind fields will also allow for light/brief accumulations along some of our lakeshore regions in the Lower Peninsula, but it's not guaranteed for everyone. Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 01/19

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/19

One of our rookies, Zeke, looking like a pro already on what I think is only his 4th run. He was out on trail 8 tonight in the Pisten Bully between Raco and Brimley. Looking great Zeke!
We had a really great base before the new snow. Trails are finally where they should have been weeks ago. We are still battling water holes in spots but we are starting to be able to fill them in. These are the main areas of concern-
Trail 472, just east of the 480 intersection. 2 water holes, one big enough that it nearly swallowed the groomer. Groomer Matt worked to fill them in with new snow tonight and hopefully the slush will freeze up.
🚨🚨Trail 49 from Alberta Lane (just south of the Soo at the power station) all the way to Gaines Hwy remains closed due to major water issues. The worst hole is the beaver pond south of 12 mile and north of Gaines Hwy. It is estimated to be several feet deep and we cannot get a groomer in there yet. We are hopeful that if the cold sticks around, we can partially open trail 49 north of the beaver pond. We have heard that sleds are still using 49 but we do not recommend it as it still closed🚨🚨
2 small water holes behind Kewadin Casino that should be easily passable by sled. We are purposely keeping the groomer out of there to let them freeze in a bit more after some warmth and rain earlier in the week.
Trails 8, 889, the Raco Powerlines, 480, 472, and the city trail system were all groomed today. Trails 494 and 49 south of Kinross will be done tomorrow.
Should be an awesome weekend!
Ride safe all! Please check out our website for a list of our commercial sponsors and remember to support those who support us! www.sootrails.org
Thanks all!❄️❄️❄️
