Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/08

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/8

Groomers will not be out today as grooming would do more harm than good in these temps….. They have said that grooming should resume in full swing tomorrow to repair the damage done with the warm temps…… pretty much a repeat of last weekend – it was amazing how these Groomer Operators whipped the trails back into shape for a great week of riding last week and yesterday….

Chance of snow remains in the forecast also.

These are the words from Buzzy the Trail Boss for the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club….”Guess the temperatures today will keep the groomers in today. No sense stirring up the snow and have it melt faster by the looks of it we will be back out there tomorrow in full swing repairing the trails. Don’t bad mouth us because of the melt as contrary to opinion we are not gods. By the way I hopped on my sled yesterday to enjoy the trails and some bone head on a rental came at me in my lane, slid side ways, rolled over, and hit my sled with his body. He was stunned for a while and I was shook but he was ok. Lots of fiberglass on the trail from the rental. His credit card will take a beating on that goof up. The last note i have is another wheeled vehicle was see stuck by the E pines in copper harbor with another truck going to recover him. Nice job done on a juicy soft trail these trails are well marked as snow mobile trails only. So there is no excuse for this. Call sheriff’s department when you see this. Back on the trails tomorrow, have patience.”

I’m not sure riders understand how much “behind the scenes” work goes into providing the awesome trails in the Keweenaw! The Groomer Operators are out there visibly making trails great, but then you have Buzzy directing the show and dealing with EVERYTHING else that goes along with the process of providing trails! A huge thank you to him and ALL he does to keep operations running so smoothly. In addition to them you have a board of directors, club volunteers, business owners etc etc etc that all play a part behind the scenes.

So unfortunate that a rider caused an accident on one of the only days Buzzy was out trying to enjoy the fruits of his and everyone else’s labor to provide the trails for all of us!

Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/08

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/8

Wow! The sunrise (shown in photos provided by Glenn Rowe and Cathy Rowe from their morning route grooming) and sunset (my photos from Brockway)was breathtaking today!

It was an amazing Spring riding day today! Trails were flat for the most part ….. we did encounter some chop on trail 3 tonight coming south from Copper Harbor, but that was to be expected with warm temps and high traffic.

As for snow consistency….. well yes, you guessed it…. mashed potatoes for the most part! As for snow cover on trails….still very good. We encountered 3 thin/bare very small areas on trail 134/135 tonight…. other than that, all good with the exception of getting in and out of towns, especially Houghton/Hancock.

We, personally did not have any issues with engine temperatures on the sleds – Neal was riding a Ski Doo Summit 146 and I was riding an awesome new Ski Doo Backcountry X 146 (huge thanks to Houghton Powersports for helping me in the process of deciding what my next sled should be!). Neither of us had any issues keeping the sleds cool.

I have also included the CURRENT(11:10pm Saturday 3/7) photos of the trail through Hancock – I’m certain by tomorrow these areas will be bare. There are ways to avoid having to travel through town by staging at different areas north of Houghton/Hancock, such as The Trailside Lodge or Vansville Bar – I would suggest calling ahead to verify availability at these locations.

If you have any questions regarding lodging, routes visit a trails, staging, etc please feel free to ask! Late season riding is not for everyone, but for those that choose to continue riding, I would love to help you have the best experience possible.

I will be riding the trail system all day tomorrow and will update a condition report then.

If you are already riding the area PLEASE share your comments regarding conditions to help others get the most information possible!
