Michigan Trail Report

Lake Gogebic Trail Report – 01/20

We did receive about a foot of snow over the last few days! The trails should start to look (and feel) more like January trails very soon! We have forecasts for good chances of snow every single day over the next week, along with some very cold temperatures over most of this week, so make sure to pack your long underwear!

WARNING: Although as a rule, we never comment about riding on Lake Gogebic itself, as the DNR (the sponsor of our grant money) does not recognize trails over open water – thus there are no trail markings on the lake. However, we’re experiencing a first ever problem on the lake that we want to make sure we inform our riders about for their safety. We have reports of two large holes of open water between the Hoop ‘N Holler Tavern (at the northwest corner of the lake) and Fishtales Resort (approx. 6 miles south of the Hoop on the west shore). There are reports, also, of ice heaves near these spots. Please use caution and ride slow enough to see far ahead of you. These conditions could change rapidly so please use caution.

FYI – the Bergland Mobil has closed, so plan you’re fueling accordingly.

That’s all for now, I will keep updating my reports as conditions change. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area we invite you to visit the chamber’s website at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (888-GOGEBIC). From all of us here on Lake Gogebic we’re wishing you a safe and good ride!

Walleye Lodge – 1/19/13

Snow continues to build and it’s great to see! About 4-6″ of accumulated snow with 1-3″ anticipated for today and snow in the forecast all next week. Temps for the most part will be very cold – so pack your base layers! Groomers are expected to go out today conditions permitting. This is what we’ve been waiting for – it was great to look up in the dark sky last night and see those big, beautiful flakes falling from the heavens above! See you soon!

Use extreme caution on lake Gogebic! 4 miles down the lake from the Hoop is a major ice heave with about 10 ft across of open water. This heave spans all the way across the lake! USE CAUTION AND CARE!
