Paradise Area Trail Report – 01/05

January 5, 2022

It was 24 degrees with the wind howling outa the NE when I crawled outa bed at 0630. Its now 0930 and 19 degrees with the wind still a blowing but it is snowing pretty hard now! Its gonna be hard to tell how much snow we get by the end of the day but "they" are calling for 3-6 for around here. Here`s what we got going today……

About the only thing we have planned is grooming around the Point trails #452 and #453. We`ll do more tomorrow after we see how much snow we get today. We are still runnin a little thin in spots.

Yesterdays run south of the river mouth went well, although Groomer Dave M. said that was the roughest ride he`s ever had in a groomer! He did say there is a couple wet spots on the power line and a couple in the Federal Forest section so watch out for them. He did leave all the gates open. Thats about all I have to report on the trails but I do have a couple of special shout-outs to give.

A big thanks goes out to the Chippewa Snow-Chasers out of Strongs for helping us out on trail #8 south of Lakeshore Dr. They groomed that 5-6 mile section a few times until we could get thru all of our water trouble areas.

Another big thanks to the couple out of the Soo that stopped and helped Groomer Dave M. clear brush off the trail yesterday. He`s sorry he didn`t catch your names but says a huge THANKS. Its kinda hard to believe this doesn`t happen very often. We have often had people just sit on their sleds and watch us work! Let me tell you a secret. If we are blocking the trail with a groomer and brushing and all you do is sit there and watch, we are working twice as slow!

One more thing I want to bring up. In yesterdays report I said you could ride on the UNPLOWED portion of M-123 to access Paradise from the south. I am not condoning this practice all the time, just until we can get the swamp trail open. I saw a couple comments saying this is NOT legal. If anybody from the law enforcement community would like to clarify this I would appreciate it. Write a comment on our FB page please.
All I have for now. Lets hope we get dumped on ALL day today.

LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Groomer Chris

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Final snowfall totals have been released from our blizzard of March 15th-17th, 2026 here in Michigan. Do note, some locations are approximated due to data gaps in the Upper Peninsula..... #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyFinal snowfall totals have been released from our blizzard of March 15th-17th, 2026 here in Michigan. Do note, some locations are approximated due to data gaps in the Upper Peninsula.

No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.

Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks. If you have any additional snowfall reports to add to the list that are not affected by drifting, drop them in the comments below here on X or Facebook. A new two-day record was also broken at the NWS office in Marquette of 36"+ with this blizzard, which is just one record smashed by this blizzard.

Paradise Area Trail Report – 01/04

January 4, 2022

22 degrees this morning and cloudy. No new snow last night but the weather guessers are calling for "some storm" coming in tonight and tomorrow. I`ve heard from 1 inch to around 8……we`ll see. Got more good than bad news today so here we go……..

I ran the Falls trail #45 yesterday and opened up the gates!! It turned out pretty good except for a few wet spots. When you see a "wet area" sign, pay attention. There are a couple of small water holes open but they are easy to get around if you are paying attention and not blasting down the trail. If we get this "storm" and the weather stays cold they should freeze up in a couple of days.

Groomer Dave M. went into the swamp south of town yesterday and called it not good. He broke thru a couple holes that are deep enough to swallow a sled. He said people are going around the gates and riding in there. Now that he has broken open the holes this is a VERY BAD idea. Don`t do it!!!! We will NOT come in and help stupid! We`ll go back in there in a couple days and see what we can do. If we get this snow there are talking about that will help. Dave is taking off this morning and going south of the river mouth to groom up the rest of the trail. If you are coming into town from the south you can run the UNPLOWED portion of M-123 into town.

We plan on runnin the Point trails #452 and #453 tomorrow. The Pine Stump trail #8 is good to go.

So, thats what I got. Not quite ready to totally drop the green flag but if we get this snow "they" are talking about I`ll do it. Keep checking back, I`ll keep ya`ll informed.

LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Groomer Chris
