Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 01/24

Greetings Sledders,

Game over for now,the rains came Sunday night and pretty much wiped us out. It was also close to being game over for Fay’s Motel last weekend as a sled caught on fire under our overhang and if it weren’t for Todd and his group’s actions we wouldn’t be in business today.

It’s snowing now but it doesn’t look like it’ll be enough to replace what we lost and what is left out there will be slushy until we get some real cold nights to freeze things back up. While we did groom everything out Sunday afternoon and night in anticipation of the rain there will be some low spots with standing water until freeze up.

It’s Saturday afternoon and I’m setting in D-1 fueling up when three guys drag a dead sled into the back parking lot, one of the guys (Todd) approaches the tractor and asks if it’s okay to leave the dead one there until he can retrieve a trailer from his place in the Lakes of the North, my response was sure, glad to help you out. In the meantime Sandy and I go to dinner at the Frederic Inn (the best place to eat in that town btw) and the guys in #5 return from riding and park under the overhang. As it turns out one of the sleds had an electrical short earlier in the day and it must have smoldered and finally caught fire which by luck coincided with Todd’s retrieval of the dead sled. They saw it, jumped to action and dragged the burning sled out from under the overhang. According to Todd the fire was minutes away from getting to the gas tank which of course would have spelled certain disaster to the main building of our complex. We thank Todd and his group for their gallant actions and we can’t blame the guys in #5 as the window configuration in that room would not afford them a view of what was going on outside. The paint on the plywood is blistered and that tells me that it wasn’t but a few minutes from combustion and once a fire gets into these old structures it is truly game over. Being nice to our fellow man can sometimes pay huge dividends.

Todd, if you feel compelled to occupy a Jacuzzi Suite for a weekend you know who to call, Thanks again.

Next report will again be when there’s something to talk about which sadly looks to be a ways out.

Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 01/18

Greetings Sledders,

Real quick report, been grooming all day and I’m pooped.

We got around 5" yesterday that really helped sweeten up the trails after the weekend traffic had it’s way with them. We are also currently in a LES advisory until tomorrow night with another 2-5" predicted although you never know what to expect with that type of event.

I was happy with the trails after grooming and had ample material to work with and I’m comfortable in saying the trails are good, I’m equally comfortable in predicting heavy traffic this weekend so we’ll have to see how they hold up.
