Grayling Trail Report - Fay’s Motel - 12/31
Trail Report by Fay's Motel
Greetings Sledders and Happy New Year,
It just dawned on me that I needed to get up and ultimately sit back down and write this deal as I was setting in the easy chair gazing at the tube with these glassed over nine mile stare groomer jockey eyes of mine. Been a long, long week with three of us carrying all of the load. I’ve been in a Deere everyday and have three more to go before a brief respite of one day kicks in and we then go into maintenance mode for a couple of days then back at it. Good God I love driving heavy equipment through the woods.
It’s also been a busy week here at the motel and we would like to thank all of you that were here to help us keep electricity running through the wires and water running through the pipes and of course the occasional piece of beef running through the, well you know what I mean. You are appreciated very much.
OKAY, ENOUGH ALREADY, FIRE IT UP DUDE:
GROOMING:
We are hard at it until Tuesday in order to keep up with the weekend traffic. I’m taking the daytime lead run the next three days which is the Lovells and Hanson Hills segments and that run will be about 8 hours, two other nut cases like myself will then jump in and do the tandem run on the main trail to Frederic over to the Blue Bear back down and across to the airport and back here. We’re doing the best we can to keep up.
TRAILS:
We’ve had lots and lots of sledders in this week and no complaints with all saying good to great rides. That is saying something considering that it is still early season riding out there. We believe that if you tell people that you are going to see some snirt stretches, some good stretches, etc that they are then not surprised with conditions and are for the most part okay with what we have to offer at the present time. Not optimal conditions by any means but certainly not terrible. Or tuuurrible as Sir Charles Barkley would say. Off trail continues to be a viable option as well.
WEATHER:
The weather wizards are calling for some snow over the next few days and temps look to behave for the next week and beyond. Nothing major on the horizon good or bad. Keep everything crossed because history tells us that a slump is going to happen at some point during the season.
Next report Monday as long as these eyes of mine don’t deteriorate and go from glassed over to crossed which could lead to some interesting reading on your end.
Ride Often and Please Be Safe,

HAPPY HOLIDAYS. - Hi Everyone, It has been very busy all week and the weekend looks to be much busier, so with exta traffic we all need to slow down and enjoy the ride and stay to the right. The groomers went through again late 12-29-09 and are scheduled to groom again Friday and Sunday, barring any problems with the equipment. The forecast is for more snow today and a Clipper system for late 12-31-09 and 1-1-10 with "large accumulations" and LES snow for the next 5 to 7 days after that. But again with any forecast, I believe it when I see it. So this will make for some sweet riding this Holiday weekend. That is what is nice around here, we are in the middle of 6 different grooming clubs, if one isn’t grooming, one of the other Clubs are grooming. There will be some ice and snirt out on the trail in the curves, so slow down and enjoy yourself. Most county roads are snow covered, so getting fuel or food shouldn’t be a problem. There is tons of snow in the woods, so two tracken and seasonal roads are a blast right now. (Which there are tons of). There is going to be some Ice on the trails and roads, so be careful. THE LAKES ARE NOT SAFE YET.
Rooms and Snowmobile Rentals are available.
We are members of the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan, Baldwin Trailriders Snowmobile Club, Benzie/Manistee Snowbirds Snowmobile Club, Irons Area Tourist Association Snowmobile Club, Wellston Area Recreation and Tourist Bureau Snowmobile Club, Lake County ORV Club and the Michigan Snowmobile Association, which are the local grooming clubs. I can not thank these guys and gals enough, they do a lot of work for free, so we all can enjoy this sport. I would only think that if someone is complaining about a bumpy trail on Saturday afternoon, come to a couple club meetings and see just what these people do. They would never complain again. Thank you again.
Call 231 745 4101 8am until 10pm. See ya soon on the trails.
Visit Wolf Lake Motel Website >>>>Happy New Year. Looks like our Lake Superior Snowmaking machine is kicking in as we have lake effect snow in the forecast now. Forecasters have predicted totals all differently…one says 5 to 8" thru Saturday-another 12-20, yet another 18 to 30". We’ll keep with our policy of letting you know how much fell when it’s on the ground. Still calling conditions Fair to Good - this depends where you’re riding… some trails are better than good, some worse. We’ll likely upgrade conditions after this snow event.
All the groomers in all areas are out.
Gogebic Range Trail Authority: 11S is open - expect to find it a little brushy is some areas but they’re still working on it. Trails 2-8 and 160 are all snow covered and freshly groomed…11N is still not groomed-the swampy area is still wet.. they are packing snow in it to get it groomable which they will do ASAP.
From the Lake Gogebic Area-the groomers are out on all trails… everything is freshly groomed. Heads Up: You may encounter Logging Trucks at the junction of 102 AND 8 W-pull over if you do.
Watersmeet groomers reporting all trails being groomed daily and Good conditions.
It’s time for our usual caution about ice: There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you plan to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.
And one more safety note… groomers can and will be out any time of the day or night, especially this week…so PLEASE pull over when you see them.
We want you to have a great time…and most importantly, to stay safe.

good base on the Boardman Valley !
Good day everyone. Trails are holding up well. We had a bunch of people out and about all over the Boardman today and had mixed reviews. Some of the early riders found it a bit bumpy, however, by afternoon, the groomers were out and everyone came in happy. The trails do have a few iced up corners and we could use a bit more snow. The forecast is calling for heavy lake effect over the next 3 days so lets all keep our fingers crossed. For those of you who will be riding over the next two days please be careful out there. You may be noticing a few new faces on the trails this season. The local sheriff will be patrolling the trails regularly. We had spoken to them yesterday and they had stopped over 100 sleds to date. They are looking for the obvious. Please be safe out there everyone and have a great new year !

Local residents know how quickly the weather can change here in Northern Michigan. After last week’s rain and warmer temps, we now are under a winter weather advisory for lake-effect snow. The area received an inch or two yesterday and the forecast is for another 2-4 inches today with significant blowing. If we get closer to four inches, that will ensure that the groomers can continue to make their rounds and keep the trails in tip-top shape. We were getting a little worried about the base getting too thin to effectively groom without churning up dirt and debris. This extra snow is just what we need. We will post an update as soon as the groomers have a chance to make another round and report on additional snow accumulation and trail conditions.

FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Wednesday 10:00–December 30, 2009
Got out for a ride yesterday and was amazed at how many folks are out there enjoying the trails. The local snowmobile club, Cadillac Winter Warriors, had their annal cookout on the trail yesterday at the intersection of Trail 6 and 37. What a great time that was! If you were in the area I sure hope you had a chance to stop by and warm up by the fire and have a chance to help support the club by buying some hot chocolate and brats or dogs. The Winter Warriors do a lot for our organization and the local community as well.
Can’t say enough good things about the trails. They are all in great shape inspite of the traffic. The groomers are out there constantly working to keep them in shape for you folks. Keep in mind our system is staffed entirely by volunteer drivers so let them know you appreciate their efforts when you see them out there.

All trails are frozen solid. Ray was out checking them last night. NO wet spots. North trail is being groomed today from Turtle Lake to 72. The gusty winds are blowing drifts into the trails. We are hoping for snow dance as you might sing LET IT SNOW**Let It Snow**let it snow**

Hi all! Happy Monday! I hope your Christmas was awesome! Today’s Report is - WE NEED SNOW! Trails held up "so-so" with the little warm up and the temp drop over the last couple days. We did get another couple inches of snow but base is still very thin and ground cover is not much better. We are under a winter weather advisory today with 2-4" BUT the winds are strong and blowing it all over so drifts in one place and nothing the next. This week’s forecast calls for lake effect snow all week but not saying much for accumulation. Lets bump that up baby! Get your dance boots on and cross your fingers that we get lots of the white stuff coming down! Groomers were out a few days ago but we need more snow now to get them out again! Its still certainly rideable but I would say ‘poor’ to ’so-so’ though for now till we get some serious snow and the groomers can get back out there. FYI - Snowmobile Safety class at the Snowbirds Clubhouse is coming up Saturday, January 9, 2010, 8am start, ages 12 and up. Free, & Lunch is provided. So, drop me a note that you are out there! I love hearing your stories and reports! This report is all of us working it together! Thanks to Joe for stopping in to say HEY! Appreciated it! BE SAFE, BE SMART, and I’ll SEEYA on the trails! Guest that rode to the Falls and then around by Pine Stump reported trails as good with the exception of the section between CR 500 and the Falls. Other guest that rode south said trails were a little on the rough side. Traffic is picking up it seems so hit the trails early.
TASA normally heads out early evening on the North trails and morning on the South trail as it takes longer to groom the South trails. TASA grooms seven days per week weather permitting and no breakdown/problem with groomer(s).
Trail 9 groomed and rated as very good by groomers.
Trail 45 groomed and rated as good by groomers. Logging just before and after the Skyline Road so watch out for those trucks.
Trail 2/473-Groomed and rated as fair. Logging for about a seven mile stretch south of Rexton. Watch for the groomer during the day and also logging trucks and deer.

12-28-09 9:50 pm - Quick trail report. - Just got in town early this morning, 2 am, got the kids and us to sleep, got back up, got our errands and supplies taken care of and managed to take a little spin down to Marenisco around 6pm. Trail was just groomed so it was beautiful. There is just 1 wet spot by the sub-station that they are grooming around onto the road and then back down, otherwise all is well. Tomorrow should be a normal day and will report on the trails when we get back in. Not sure which run we will do, Lake of the Clouds, Ontonagan, Rockland, Houghton, etc … Will sleep on it and decide in the morning.
BTW: The lady at the gas station said no new Trail maps for this season have been delivered yet. Not sure if anyone has any but I’m sure their won’t be any major changes that will trip anyone up.

Trail Report by Fay's Motel
Greetings Sledders,
I hate seeing two ambulances heading in either direction on Old 27 in front of our place, in this case Southbound, which could easily be another sled accident. Which is what just happened as I sat down to write this, the ambulance part, not sure if there’s been an accident. Let’s hope not we’ve already had a fatality and three young ladies from Ohio injured and the season is young. Please be careful.
Sorry for the delay in getting this out tonight seems that I’m back in the Grooming saddle once again and this stretch through the weekend will be double duty due to a lack of drivers because of people visiting for the holidays. Come on now I ask you (well not YOU per se as none of you are groomer jockeys that I know of) what’s more important, grooming trails or setting around shooting the bull with someone you may or may not want to shoot the bull with to begin with? Although one of the guys did mention that he’d like to take his Mother By Law out for a tractor ride and possibly not back.
LET’S DO IT, TIME FOR A COCKTAIL AND UNWIND:
GROOMING:
I found out today that rubber and ice don’t like each other much and it doesn’t matter what configuration the rubber is in, tracks or tires. Some parts of one’s anatomy tighten up and other parts like the heart work faster when you’re in an eleven foot tall, fifty foot long, 22,000 pound machine and it starts getting squirrelly on an icy road. It doesn’t have to move too much to trigger the aforementioned bodily things.
We are in full swing with the schedule. Everything will be back in shape by the end of the day tomorrow with the main segments already done and those segments will get hit daily for the rest of the week.
TRAILS:
About the only mildly negative thing that I can say about the trails is that the heavily travelled segments still show some snirty stretches and those are healing with each new snowfall we get and will improve. There’s a fair amount of traffic locally and much more around Fredericanville. So we will have to contend with that aspect for a few days until the holiday stretch concludes.
WEATHER:
Nothing bad here. Temps are supposed to hold and drop by Thursday and a shot of snow on a daily basis. We don’t need tons at a time which really doesn’t do squat, just a few inches here and there to keep things fresh, thank you very much.
Next report Thurs. evening.

Trail 45 to the Falls is reported in fair to good condtion. Logging just before and after the Skyline Road. CR 500 to the Falls has wet areas and rough.
Trail 9 rated as good by groomers and riders. Trail 2/473 to Rexton is rated as fair with marginal base. 473 South of Rexton has about a seven mile section of plowed road due to logging. Watch for trucks and deer.
We have guests that are out riding now so later tonight or tomorrow I will have some rider input on the trails.
Visit Gateway Motel Website >>>>We got about an inch of fresh snow yesterday. Snowing this morning with temps dropping thru the day and 3-5 inches predicted.
Riders report that when they rode north to Mackinaw snow got very thin. Others rode to East Jordan and report the same. The ‘best’ snow right now seems to be right around Gaylord/Grayling/Blue Bear.
Keith/Grayling groomer called to let us know they had groomed out the ruts that were on the trail over by the Lovells area. They do a great job keeping on top of their trails and its appreciated!
Riders also reported seeing the Gaylord groomer out last night smoothing things over.
Conditions aren’t the best, but are still very ridable in this area. For the most part our guests have been enjoying their days out on their sleds.
Ride Safe. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to stay with a hot breakfast and friendly hospitality or a snowmobile rental give us a call at 989-732-2703 or 989-732-4914.

We received a couple inches of snow last night. The 6" - 8" base is holding.
Just spoke a guest that been out most of the day. They rode from here to Seney, they said the trails are good. They ran into water crossing the swamp, but were able to get around it quite well. Other guests rode near Paradise reporting trails good between here and there.
Traffic is moderate.

FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Sunday 4:30 p.m.–December 27, 2009
Our Trail Coordinator just returned from a ride on our system to assess the condition of the trails after the unseasonably warm temperatures and the holiday sleet storm and rains. He reports the White Pine Trail is shy of snow but smooth. Trails #35 and #358 are white and very smooth. Trails #6 and #637 are mostly smooth (only a few bumps in the thick Pines) and mostly white. Sadly, he discovered Trail #37 was loaded with moguls and frozen solid atleast as far north as Trail #637. Chances are Trail #37 has problems further north as well but he chose not to ride any further north. The condition of Trail #37 is due to a groomer scheduling conflict. The conflict has been addressed and corrected.
The Cadillac Winter Promotions Board of Directors and its many conscientious, hard-working volunteers apologize for the condition of Trail #37 as it is an embarassment to the high-standards they strive to achieve. You may be sure they will be working hard and doing they can to make Trail #37 the best it can be.
Snow Gauge: 7 inches

Trail Report by Wolf Lake Motel
HAPPY HOLIDAYS. - Hi Everyone, after the refreeze we did get an inch or two yesterday and an inch or two today, with 1" to 3" more forecasted for today and tomorrow, but again this is just a forecast, I believe it when I see it. The guest that are out riding today are giving mixed reviews on the trails. Some are saying they are bumpy and others are saying that the trails are sweet. It all depends on what trail you are no. That is what is nice around here, we are in the middle of 6 different grooming clubs, if one isn’t grooming, one of the others are grooming. This is still early season riding and the ground is not completely frozen, so trail conditions can change fast with the temp. Most county roads are snow covered, so getting fuel or food shouldn’t be a problem, except right in the Village of Baldwin where it is getting a little bare.

Base: 5 inches
Snowfall Past 24 hours: 1 inch
Current Trail Conditions: Good
The Blue Bear is smooth but dirty. The color cannot be improved untill we get a significant snow. There is dirt showing in some corners, and other places its a nice white. We are only grooming every otherday (at least south of m 131)to help preserve what base we have, but if traffic becomes too heavy for this plan, daily grooms may resume.
Petoskey Snowmobile Club - 12/26
Base: 4 inches
Current Trail Conditions: Excellent
Had some rain, freezing rain and warmer temps on Christmas Day. That all resulted in significant melting of the snow base in the area. Luckily, we had a pretty good base before this all happened but you will start to see some icy patches and possibly a little bit of dirt as we get into the weekend. The riding is still good as temperatures have dropped but just watch out for patches of ice.
See our trail map at http://www.petoskeysnowmobileclub.org
Visit Boyne Recreational Rentals Website >>>>We got just about an inch of fresh snow overnight. Trails are packed and in good shape. Corners are icy, and a few bare spots on hilltops but otherwise everyone enjoying their rides.
Over by Lovells riders report some four-wheelers had tore up the trail and left nasty ruts.
Warning - do not take a chance and ride on the lake yet. Three snowmobiles are at the bottom of Otsego Lake. All riders are safe, although they were good and scared and cold! Its just not worth the risk.
Give us a call if you’re looking for a room with a hot breakfast, directly on the trail, parking right by your room and great hospitality. Ski Doo snowmobile rental also available.
